Plates secures UK's first plant-based Michelin star

Plates, the Shoreditch restaurant from brother-sister duo Kirk and Keeley Haworth (pictured), has received a Michelin star, becoming the UK’s first fully plant-based outlet to secure the accolade.

Having opened in July 2024, Plates has established itself as a leader in plant-based cooking in just seven months.

The restaurant offers seven- or eight-course tasting menus, with dishes including barbecued Maitake mushroom with black bean mole, kimchi, aioli and puffed rice; and caramelised Lion’s Mane with smoked shio koji, bread caramel, cauliflower cream and black truffle jus.

“Earning a Michelin star is such an incredible honour and a lifetime goal since I was a young boy,” says Kirk. “To be the first in the plant-based sphere in the UK to win this prestigious award makes me unbelievably proud and I am so grateful to our talented team for their support and dedication.”

“At Plates, we’ve always believed in pushing boundaries, and this achievement proves that plant-based dining can stand proudly at the highest level of gastronomy,” adds Keeley.

The Haworth’s are currently planning the next chapter for the brand in the form of the Plates Farm and Retreat, located in the heart of the southwestern French countryside. Doors are slated to open in May.

Elsewhere in the Michelin Guide 2025

Michelin presented the 2025 Michelin Guide to Great Britain & Ireland’s restaurant selection at its annual ceremony, which was held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum in Glasgow on Monday 10 February.

Some of the big awards on the night went to Mark Birchall's Moor Hall, which picked up a third star, becoming the 10th restaurant to achieve this status.

A further three restaurants have been newly awarded two Michelin stars. In London, the Angelo Sato-founded concept Humble Chicken in Soho secured a second star a year after receiving its first; while The Ritz in Piccadilly, which secured its first star in 2017, was also awarded a second.

Outside of the capital, near the Kent coast, Allister Barth and Alice Bussi have earned two stars for their neighbourhood restaurant Hide and Fox. In total, 29 two-star restaurants have been recommended by inspectors in the 2025 selection.

This year’s guide also named 22 new one-star venues, as well as 36 Bib Gourmands and five new Green stars, awarded for outstanding commitment to sustainability.

With the special awards, Opening of the Year Award went to OMA, London; the Chef Mentor Award to Adam Byatt from Trinity, London; the Young Chef Award to Ash Valenzuela-Heeger from Riverine Rabbit, Birmingham; the Service Award to Jasmine Sherry from Fish Shop, Ballater; and the Sommelier Award to Zsolt Lukács from daróg, Galway.

A total of 1,147 restaurants – including 220 with a star rating – are included on the list.
