Shoreditch's Nest to reopen as 'Tavern'

After nine years, restaurant Nest in London's Shoreditch will run its final service on 28 March, with the site reopening in late April as 'Tavern'.

Owner Johnnie Crowe (above right), who also runs Michelin-starred Restaurant St Barts, says Tavern will be an "entirely new British bistro concept".

Nest first opened in Hackney in 2018 before relocating to Shoreditch in 2023. It was the first restaurant co-founded by Crowe.

Over nearly a decade, Nest became known for whole animal cookery and its monthly changing tasting menu, using produce sourced from British small scale farmers and fishermen.

The move to Tavern marks a shift in format, moving away from tasting menus and instead focusing on nostalgic British cooking designed for more informal dining.

"Nest has been a hugely important part of our story for nearly a decade," says Crowe. "We are incredibly proud of what it became, first in Hackney and then in Shoreditch. Tavern is about taking everything we believe in about British produce and translating it into a fun way of eating that we all personally love."

Kirsty Easterbrook (above left), previously sous chef at St Barts, will be head chef at Tavern and will work alongside Brendan Appleby (middle: Inver, Silo, Lyles), formerly head chef of St Barts, who now takes on the role of executive chef.

What food can you expect?

The menu centres on British dishes, beginning with snacks such as puffed pig skin with smoked cod’s roe, lamb scrumpets with mint, Tavern sausage with curry sauce, Louët Feisser oysters with yuzu kosho, and a rose veal sweetbread burger.

Larger dishes feature turbot with English sparkling wine sauce and lamb or hogget with anchovy and gem lettuce, as well as Welsh Wagyu rib of beef with mushroom ketchup and bone marrow sauce, and Tamworth pork chop with cider and mustard.

Tavern takes cues from the spirit of traditional pubs but is positioned as a bistro. Cooking over fire, daily changing dishes and plates designed for sharing will sit alongside desserts, and served with classic cocktails and beer on tap.

Tavern will open in the former Nest site in Shoreditch on 28 April 2026.
