Zizzi offers Italian fans consolation freebies

Casual dining brand Zizzi is offering Italians free meals during the FIFA World Cup as a consolation for missing out on this year's tournament.

Italy missed out on qualification for the third tournament running, so Zizzi says it is turning its restaurants into the "unofficial embassy" for the non-competing nation.

From 8 to 18 June, any Italian national dining at Zizzi will receive a free main course simply by presenting a valid Italian passport.

"Italy has already given the world the things people crave during tournament season, pasta, pizza and gathering around a table with friends and family," says Corrine Prior, brand and customer experience director at Zizzi. "While the Azzurri may not be competing this summer, we wanted to give Italians across the UK a reason to celebrate."

For non-Italians diners, Zizzi is offering 30% off food, including starters, sharers, mains and desserts, until the end of the group stages (Friday 26 June).

The campaign is called Forza Italia, Forza Zizzi.
