Pine chef-patron to appear on Great British Menu

Cal Byerley, chef patron of Northumberland’s Restaurant Pine, is set to appear on the 2023 season of Great British Menu.

He features as one of four chefs representing the northeast of England in the regional heats, which start on 31 January and will see the chefs competing for a place in finals week. Byerley, 32, is new to the hit BBC show.

The series, which starts with the northeast of England regional heats, will broadcast on BBC Two at 8pm on 31 January, with three episodes being shown each week over a period of nine weeks.

This year’s theme is celebrating Britain’s success in animation and illustration, with landmark figures such as children’s book illustrators E. H. Shepard and Peggy Fortnum and animators such as Nick Park and Sheila Graber.

The programme format remains the same, with Andi Oliver returning to present the series, with a judging line-up of celebrity chef Tom Kerridge, restaurateir Nisha Katona and comedian and food podcast host Ed Gamble.

Of his upcoming appearance, Byerley says: ''It really still hasn’t sunk in that I’m a part of Great British Menu 2023. It’s a little bit daunting but I’m looking forward to having the opportunity to show a little of what we are about at Pine and representing Northumberland in the northeast regional heats and seeing what happens against some of the UK’s best established and up and coming chefs.''
