Eric Sze returns to Bao Borough

On 17 and 18 September, Bao Borough will welcome back guest chef Eric Sze of New York-based Taiwanese restaurants 886 and Wenwen for two nights of Moon Festival BBQs.

Marking the time of year that the moon is believed to be at its fullest and brightest, the Moon Festival also coincides with the autumn harvest and is a time for family and friends to gather together and watch the lunar spectacle. In Taiwan it is traditional to celebrate with a barbecue, so Sze will take over the kitchen at Borough and dish up a feast of special boas, skewers, sharing plates and more. 

The Sze x Bao experience

On arrival at Bao's interpretation of a Taiwanese grill house, guests will be greeted by the fragrance of smoke from the fiery grills, and the sight of long tables pushed together for celebratory communal feasting. 

The set menu includes Moon Festival bao and sharing platters of taro pork belly rice inspired by the northern-style cuisine of the Hakka people in Taiwan. All night long, Sze will cook a range of flavourful skewers on the grill. For dessert, a moon cake bao modelled on the traditional sweet snacks will be offered. Throughout the evening of games and celebrations, diners will also be given two drinks as part of the set menu. 

Sze is the chef and co-owner of New York's 886 and Wenwen, both of which bring Taiwanese-inspired cuisine and bold flavours to the city. Raised in Taipei, Sze has fond memories of the vibrant street food culture from his childhood, and opened the acclaimed 886 in the East Village in 2018 to serve 'authentically inauthentic' Taiwanese food. He then opened Wenwen in Brooklyn in 2022, earning glowing reviews from the likes of The New York Times for its recreation of the comfort and flavours of a Taiwanese household.
