I love writing about the wonders of restaurants, but there’s nothing better than getting out there and experiencing the industry first-hand. It’s got to be one of the most rewarding aspects of this job. Witnessing the passion, soaking up the buzz, meeting the creatives that make culinary magic happen. It’s even better when your inbox is graced with an invite to try a brand-new menu launched at one of the trendiest haunts in your hometown. Dinner, cocktails and a brief stroll home – how could I say no?

Bank is a small yet stylish independent in Totterdown – one of Bristol’s most up-and-coming neighbourhoods. It focuses on seasonal, fire-cooked small plates, and the venue recently revamped its offering just in time for spring. At a press launch event, we were lucky enough to try every single dish on the menu. Every. Single. One! When funny-foodie – and proud Bristolian – Jayde Adams is also on board to sample the goods, you know you’re in for a good night. Grilled focaccia with black garlic amino butter; Atlantic prawns with charred gem, red onion and lobster aioli; and Ratte potato with whipped cheddar, Marmite and furikake were just some of the menu highlights. As dish-upon-vibrant-dish arrived at our banquet-style table, the evening truly was the gift that kept on giving.

The food is just one element of Bank’s classy offer, with the brand building somewhat of a local legacy for its marvellous mixology. Much like its fare, these aren’t your run-of-the-mill cocktails. Thankfully, we had a feature on Cocktail Menus going into our upcoming issue. How’s that for the stars aligning? So, you can find out more about Bank’s innovative serves – and the art of cocktails in general – from page 44. Now,
excuse me while I make a reservation at my new local…
