Deliveroo reports 105% growth in vegan orders

Digital food order and delivery company Deliveroo has revealed that demand for plant-based dishes has grown 105% since World Vegan Month last year (November 2020).

The platform reports that it now has over 14,000 vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants from across the UK on board. Cities where the service supplied the most vegan orders include: Brighton, Bristol, Leeds, York, Manchester, Liverpool, Norwich, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sheffield and London. 

According to a survey of 2,000 people commissioned by Deliveroo, the vegan trend isn't just specific to takeaway foods, with 20% of respondents saying they will be opting for a vegan or vegtarian Christmas dinner in 2021. Of those people, a majority (58%) stated that they'd only started eating plant-based at Christmas in the last four years or less, with 46% claiming they had done so within the last two. 

Overall, slightly more women eat vegan or vegetarian at Christmas (21%) compared to men (18%). Surprisingly, however, male respondents (47%) are more likely to have adopted veganism or vegatarianism in the past year than females (23%).

The main reasons people gave for going plant-based this festive season was because a) they anticipate catering for vegetarians and vegans at the table (56%), b) for health benefits (32%), c) for variety (27%) and d) for animal welfare (27%).

Two years ago, Bristol-based restaurant Oowee Vegan was crowned ‘Restaurant of the Year’ in Britain’s first-ever Deliveroo Awards, beating off competition from restaurants on the Deliveroo app across the whole of the UK. The six finalists for this year’s 'Best Vegan' category for the inaugural Deliveroo Awards include Neat Burger, What The Pitta, Oowee Vegan, Four Side, Frost Burgers and Mildreds.
