Roti King coming to South London in spring

Malaysian restaurant brand Roti King will open its second restaurant in the capital, and its first South London outpost, at Battersea Power Station this spring.

The brand has built a strong following from its Euston site in its eight years of serving authentic roti canai, made fresh every day. The chain's newest site will benefit from a busy riverside location, as well as a new system, not yet implemented at its Euston venue, to simplify the customer booking process. Roti King Euston is known for its 45-minute queues, making it one of the hardest places in the local area to secure a walk-in table.

Head chef and owner Sugen Gopal will bring the same traditional skill and theatre to the new site, with roti made by hand in front of customers. Diners are fully ecouraged to eat with their hands and experience the food as they would on the streets of Malaysia.

"There is nowhere in the UK that makes roti canai the way we do at roti king," says Gopal. "Our attention to detail, fresh British ingredients and a few secret techniques makes this the most authentic place to eat roti in the UK. I am beyond thrilled to see my cuisine and heritage becoming so popular in the UK. This opening at Battersea Power Station represents the start of a very exciting period for Roti King."

A range of new dishes will be available at the Battersea branch, including more vegetarian- and vegan-friendly options. The chain is aiming to be the first in the UK to create vegan roti canai, which is currently in development in preparation for the opening. All roti canai will be offered in four options: chicken, mutton, dahl and fish, as well as the stuffed murtabak with a variety of fillings.

Dishes served with coconut rice include beef randang and ayam goreng berempah. The southeast Asian staple of nasi goreng will also feature, along with laksa, noodle dishes and a selection of sides. Sweet treats of condensed milk, coconut jam (kaya) and banana roti will also be offered.

South Asian beer by the bottle alongside canned wines make up the simple but carefully paired alcohol range. Takeaway and delivery for the local catchment area will be on offer at Battersea, and guests will be encouraged to order and enjoy their food by the water during the summer months.

Roti King joins a line-up of over 20 bars, restaurants, cafés, fitness and leisure offerings already open in Circus West Village at Battersea Power Station including Gordon Ramsay’s Street Pizza, Francesco Mazzei’s Fiume, The Turbine Theatre, Be Military Fit, DNA VR, Black Sheep Coffee, Boom Cycle and The Cinema in The Arches.
