Club Mexicana coming to Spitalfields

Mexican-Californian-inspired, vegan street food concept Club Mexicana will return to its east London roots in November, opening a new venue in Spitalfields.

Club Mexicana first started as a sold-out supperclub in 2014. Founder Meriel Armitage has overseen launches in Kingly Court and Seven Dials Market following a series of successful residencies.

The 70-seater space resides in a listed building that was formerly a gallery, printing press and bank. The new design stays true the building's heritage, maintaining original features such as exposed brick walls, concrete columns, wooden floors and a brushed metal staircase.

The Commercial Street venue offers the brand's biggest plant-based menu yet, including rotating specials and new additions. Fresh creations include Birria Tacos – crispy corn tortillas stuffed with Club Mexicana's marinated, slow-cooked 'beef' brisket, queso, onion and onion salsa, dipped in signature chilli consomme. Back on the menu is the Tofish and Chips Taco, combining beer-battered tofish with fresh pea salsa verde, tartar sauce, pink pickled onions and crispy matchstick potatoes. Classics such as the Cheezeburger Taco, BBQ Short 'Rib' Taco and signature burritos will also be available.

Sides sich as chipotle-fired Mini Chorizo Empanadas and Charred Seasonal Vegetables with habanero peanut salsa will be offered. With a menu made for sharing, guests can tuck into trays of fully-loaded nachos with queso, the brand's trademark ground 'beef', guacamole, pico de gallo, pink onions, pickled jalapeños, chipotle oil and chill lime salt.

Desserts include churros, fried to order and served with cinnamon sugar or a rich, dark chocolate sauce.

Bartenders will be on hand behind the custom-made terrazzo bar to whip up tequila-based serves. The drinks menu will include brand-new cocktails such as the bracing Blanco Negroni, the fiery Jalepenoback and the bittersweet chocolate-infused Mexicana Martini, alongside iced favourites such as Frozen Margaritas and Piña Coladas. A thoughtfully chosen selection of small-scale tequilas and mezcals will be available to shot and sip, alongside Modelo beer.

On the opening, Armitage comments: "We’ve had such an incredible journey since our Hackney supper club and street food beginnings. Obviously the last few years have been a wild ride too, so I’m super excited about being able to just get back to slinging tacos! "
