Vapiano sets Italian Kiss world record

On Thursday 6 July, a date otherwise known as International Kissing Day, 463 couples set a new Guinness World Record for the most people in one place simultaneously enjoying an Italian Kiss. The task saw each pair share a spaghetti noodle, eating it from opposite ends and meeting in the middle for a delicious 'Italian Kiss'.

For this venture, the guests of Vapiano in Hangar 4 at the iconic venue of former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, had a maximum of 30 seconds to complete a successful attempt. The world record challenge was also attended by celebrities, including musician Mike Singer and his girlfriend Sophie Marstatt, alongside 1,000 fellow Vapiano fans.

The rules for the world record attempt:

  1. Each couple is served a single piece of spaghetti made of wheat flour at least 15 cm long.
  2. Every couple, consisting of two persons, is valid.
  3. Participation is possible for persons of legal age 18 years and older.
  4. The world record is started with a loud and clear start signal and ends with this signal.
  5. At the start signal, both participants must start eating the spaghetti from teach end.
  6. The spaghetti must be completely consumed within 30 seconds.
  7. The test may be performed sitting or standing.
  8. If the piece of spaghetti breaks/drops during the test, the couple is excluded.

The goal was to beat the former Italian Kiss Guinness World Record, set last year by 433 couples in Belgium. Before this, the original record was set by Vapiano in France and held since 2020. This year, Vapiano wanted to take the crown back to the original German home of Vapiano.

At 19:30pm on Thursday 6 July, the time had come. Under observation of the official Guinness World Record jury, led by Seyda Subasi-Gemici, the existing record was broken. Exactly 600 couples successfully met for the Italian Kiss and cheered the success.

"It's great that we were able to bring the world record back to Vapiano with the support of our fantastic guests – that makes us very proud. It's almost even nicer that we were able to celebrate love, good food and the Italian joy of life together with so many people on International Kissing Day. After challenging times, this day is a special highlight for Vapiano," says Vikki O’Neill, global marketing director.
