Wagamama coming to India this year

A leading Pan-Asian restaurant operator is set to expand to India in the second half of 2024.

The Restaurant Group-owned brand Wagamama has announced a partnership with Travel Food Services (TFS), India's fastest-growing travel food and retail company, which will see the brand establish a presence in the country this year in response to rising consumer demand.

Following the expansion, Wagamama will operate in 19 countries worldwide.

The concept will initially launch in Mumbai Airport's International Terminal, with the group planning to further expand to transport hubs across the country. Mumbai's status as India's financial hub, coupled with the airport's connectivity across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, make it the ideal location to introduce Wagamama to new customers and global travellers.

The evolution of Wagamama

The brand is hugely popular in the UK's casual dining scene, known for its vast Pan-Asian offering and 50% plant-based menu. The move to India marks the latest chapter in the brand's success, having first opened its doors in London's Bloomsbury in 1992.

India's fast-growing economy offers an attractive market for the Wagamama brand. The nation's large and diverse population, along with a rising middle-class with increasing disposable incomes means it has a predominantly youthful population, closely aligned with Wagamama's core customer base.

Thomas Heier, CEO of Wagamama, comments: "We are delighted to enter India later this year through our partnership with TFS, bringing our Pan-Asian cuisine to a market where we anticipate significant demand. We look forward to working closely with TFS to scale our presence across India, as we continue our international expansion into exciting growth markets."
