Lahpet Larder opens in Bermondsey

The founders of a Burmese restaurant brand based in London have launched their latest outpost in Bermondsey.

Lahpet Larder, named after the Burmese word for 'tea', nods to the local history of the area, once coined London's larder for its extensive transport links for the trade and storage of produce.

Lahpet Larder comes from Dan Anton and Zaw Mahesh – the brains behind the existing Lahpet restaurants in Shoreditch and London's West End. The venue, which launched on 20 July, draws influence from the duo's Burmese heritage and love for the rich produce of Myanmar.

The menu highlights ingredients imported directly from Myanmar, focusing on both classic and regional culinary styles, along with a larder guests can browse and take a range of indigenous ingredients home.

The restaurant offers a 90-cover dining room where walls are adorned with bamboo-entwined greenery, mirroring the verdant landscape of Myanmar. Lahpet's signature pink and bronze tones run throughout, with the interior split into an eight-seater bar and separate cocktail and snack area. This is punctuated by a central open kitchen, while a 24-seat private dining area is tucked away at the back. The frontage sees large glass windows open onto Bermondsey Street.

The menu

Head chef Jan Ivanov is supported by sous chef, Tin Aung Khaing. The menu itself has been crafted and verseen by Min Maung Maung and co-founder, Mahesh. It centres on sharing plates and bowls including pork with pon yay gyi (fermented horsegram beans), Rakhine salmon and papaya salad, as well as Dawei Mohinga, a regional version of the classic Burmese fish noodle soup.

Desserts include rice flan with coconut jam, Burmese milk tea ice cream and homemade sorbets. Cocktails such as lime leaf and lemongrass spritz, tamarind and jaggery sour and pickled tea oil martini complement the flavours that run throughout the menu.
