McCain's street food start-up investments top £200,000

McCain Foodservice Solutions has invested a further £58,000 into seven successful foodservice entrepreneurs who showcased their talents and determination through the McCain Streets Ahead programme, powered by KERB+.

McCain's Streets Ahead programme supports the foodservice industry by upskilling and creating opportunities for individuals from less-advantaged backgrounds. Since its inception in 2022, the programme has focused on promoting diversity and providing a path into the industry for those who need additional support to make their dreams a reality.

Over the past two years, the programme has honed the skills and business ideas of over 200 participants. During the third panel day on 24 July, seven entrepreneurs presented their business concepts to a panel of McCain and KERB+ judges, impressing enough to secure further investment from McCain.

The 2024 cohort

This year's participants wowed the panel with various street food concepts showcasing global authenticity. Highlights included corn dogs and spiral potatoes, a rich goat curry and a traditional Turkish cheese borek. The panel also enjoyed Syrian chicken liver toasties, Lebanese kebabs and crispy falafel, with Iranian sandwiches completing the selection.

Four participants secured the maximum investment of £10,000, with the remaining three receiving between £4,000 to £8,000, tailored to meet their specific business needs. The funding is complemented by ongoing coaching from KERB+ experts.

Since its inception, McCain has invested £204,000 in 26 promising business concepts, with Streets Ahead alumni now operating in markets across the UK – including KERB locations in London such as Cowcross Yards, Fleet Place and beneath The Gherkin – and cafés, hosting cookery classes, pop-ups and events.

Looking ahead to 2025, McCain and KERB+ are committed to continuing their support for people from less advantaged backgrounds.
