Big Mamma confirms first Birmingham outpost

Restaurant group Big Mamma has announced plans to launch its first restaurant in Birmingham on 29 November.

The French operator, which owns some of Europe's most popular Italian restaurant concepts, is now bringing its generous menus and Italian flair to its second UK city. The 150-cover space will be decked out with romantic and whimsical interiors while serving homemade Italian classics.

Located on Birmingham's Chamberlain Square, La Belleza is inspired by wild, overgrown courtyards in Perugia. It will feature 5,000 vintage bottles on the walls, seven-metre-long tapestry curtains, handmade Murano glass chandeliers and a white and green Italian marble floor.

The menu will showcase produce sourced from the Bel Paese, including burrata fresh from Puglia and 24-month-aged prosciutto di Parma DOP. All dishes will be 100% homemade, including fresh pasta and puffy, crispy Neapolitan pizzas. Pasta dishes include Big Mamma's II Gran Carbonara, served from an 8kg pecorino wheel; creamy Mafaldine al Tartufo with truffle and mascarpone sauce; and the Pici al Ragu di Agnello, served in spiced San Marzano tomato sauce with slow-cooked Cornish lamb ragu.

Desserts will be indulgent and oversized, including the six-inch tall lemon meringue pie and a giant profiterole stuffed with caramel, fior di latte gelato and pecans, topped with warm chocolate sauce. The drinks list will comprise organic Italian wines and XXL cocktails.
