Benares unveils brand-new look

A Michelin-star Indian restaurant in Mayfair has reopened following a major renovation.
From 10 February, guests at Banares will also be able to experience a brand-new menu created by executive chef Sameer Taneja.
Benares 2.0
The makeover was led by interior designer Dale Arkinson of Rosendale Design. Inspired by the holy Indian city of Varanasi, colloquially known as Benares, the revamped site includes a new entrance and reception area featuring an awning, planters filled with lush foliage and a candle wall that sets the tone for the upstairs bar and dining room.
The main dining space, previously monochrome, now incorporates layers of colour and texture. The room features ornate ceiling artwork and intricate backlit Jali panels on the walls, redolent of the spiritual energy of the restaurant's namesake city.
Since launching in 2003, Benares has merged top-quality British ingredients with authentic Indian techniques and flavours. To accompany the venue's new design, chef Taneja has curated a menu designed to showcase the restaurant's legacy and craftsmanship. Dishes include Du Ka Truffle Shorba – a winter truffle and rabbit stew; vindaloo with oysters and Goan sausage served with sanna, a steamed coconut and rice bun; and, to finish, Rasmalai infused with rose, cardamom and vanilla.
The classics menu section brings back beloved dishes and traditional curries such as Kukkad (chicken) Mekhani and Meat Korma.
"This marks an exciting new chapter for Benares," says the chef. "The refurbishment embodies our ambition to craft a space that mirrors the vibrancy and creativity of our cuisine. The new menu is a celebration of the finest British seasonal ingredients, enriched with bold flavours and techniques, offering a fresh take on modern Indian dining. I’m excited to welcome guests to experience the energy, innovation, and passion that define this next step for Benares."
