Gunpowder to open in Lisbon

Gunpowder, the Michelin Bib Gourmand group of Indian restaurants from Harneet Baweja, will open overseas for the first time – in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon.

The venue is situated in the heart of Chiado, Lisbon’s ever-growing cultural hub. Diners will be welcomed to the 60-cover restaurant with a view of the open kitchen, or they can sit out on the 12-seater terrace

Gunpowder Lisbon will exemplify the Portuguese influence on Goa and Mumbai’s cuisine. The menu will showcase recipes collected from Baweja’s past travels to Bombay and Goa, emphasising Gunpowder’s signature style and traditional Indian hospitality. The concise menu will draw on flavours and spices from across India and Portugal, with seasonal plates centred around the wealth of fresh seafood available, sourced from carefully-selected local fishermen.

Unique dishes will include grill plates such as tandoori plaice; grilled razor clams with moilee sauce and pickled onions and Ambedi black cod with green coorgi Sauce. Alongside these will be Gunpowder classics such as the renowned Karwari soft shell crab and a spin on the vermicelli doughnut, which will feature lamb in place of Gunpowder’s classic venison.

"Portugal has heavily influenced Indian cuisine over the years, so it  feels right to open Gunpowder’s first restaurant outside of the UK here," says Baweja. "I spent a lot of my childhood exploring the coastal towns of Goa and Mumbai, enjoying traditional dishes and incredible seafood. I am looking forward to sharing these experiences with our friends in Lisbon and using the abundance of incredible produce on offer."
