BKC opens second site

BKC, an acronym for Biryani Kebab Chai, launched its second location yesterday (3 October), bringing authentic Indian cuisine from the Awadhi region to Moor St, Soho.

Awadhi cuisine is defined by its aromatic, distinct flavours and unique textures. The bawarchis (chefs) and rakabdars (gourmet cooks) of Awadh invented the Dum style of cooking (the art of cooking slowly over a fire), which has become synonymous with Lucknow today, known as Awadh of India. Spreads consisted of kebabs, kormas, biryanis, Galawat, nahari-kulchas, zarda, sheermal, rumali rotis and warqi parathas.

Following the success of its first branch, which opened in Marble Arch last September, BKC's second outpost marks the start of a major expansion plan for BKC, with additional sites lined up over the coming years.

The new restaurant offers a more expansive menu, featuring BKC classics alongside a selection of new dishes – including Bhatti Ka Khargosh (chargrilled rabbit legs infused with allspice and yoghurt), Tandoori Lobster (chargrilled lobster infused with lime and pepper, served with corn on the cob and raw mango chutney) and Kathal Ki Shami (pan-seared jackfruit and walnut patties served with coriander and chutney).

Of the new opening, BKC founder Jeet Mitra – also the founder of Coupette, which will be establishing a second site, Atelier Coupette, next door to BKC Soho – says: "BKC is so close to my heart as I have been eating his style of food since I developed my taste buds as a kid. Being in this industry for 20 years has afforded me the privilege to open BKC, and I hope to convey my passion and culture to the people of the UK in the coming years."

Mitra has teamed up with executive chef Arsh Thakur, who has developed his technique while working with some of the world's most renowned hotels and restaurants over the last 25 years. The pair founded BKC together and will both oversee the new Soho venue.
